An incredible season for the Brentwood Christian School boys basketball team came to an end last Friday in the TAPPS 5A state semifinals. The Bears lost to Arlington Grace Prep, 51-36, at Waco University High School.
Playing without leading scorer and junior Marcus Zelee, the Bears put up a valiant effort against one of TAPPS' premier basketball programs, entering halftime down just seven, 31-24. But a tough third quarter helped Grace extend its lead, and BCS lost for the first time since Dec. 20.
The Bears end the year with an overall record of 28-9. Qualifying for the state tournament marked back-to-back seasons the program has reached the final four and just the third time ever in school history.
Despite the team falling just shy of their ultimate goal of winning state, the season produced another exemplar representation of positive culture and success at BCS. The team loses three seniors, Blake Petty, Coleston Allen and Jake Elvin, from this year's team and will have to replace the trio's production next year.
The Bears figure to return Zelee and fellow juniors Bryant Herring, Zach Czerlinsky and Caleb Catron, among others, as they will look to reload and contend once again in TAPPS 5A.
