Victory was sweet on Friday afternoon for the Lady Bears volleyball team. Not unfamiliar, but certainly sweet.
The Brentwood Christian School volleyball team took out Regents School of Austin in a thrilling, 3-2 come-from-behind victory to claim the TAPPS 2-5A district title and earn the No. 1 seed for the upcoming playoffs.
The victory marks the fourth straight district title for the program, the first two coming under former coach and current St. Michael's Prep head coach Rory Tyson, the latter two under second-year head coach Paula Trejos.
After taking a 1-0 sets lead, Regents stormed back to win the second and third sets, creating a huge hole for the Lady Bears to overcome. In a match that saw multiple lead changes and long rallies, BCS stormed back and won the fourth set, setting up a fifth set winner-take-all-scenario.
Despite massive swings both ways and Regents taking the match to set point twice, the Lady Bears were able to escape with a 19-17 victory in the fifth set to avenge its only loss in district play, also versus Regents, back on Oct. 18.
Looking ahead, Brentwood will have two additional games before the playoffs begin. Next Tuesday, the team will host Veritas at 5 p.m. at home before traveling to Round Rock Christian Academy on Thursday, Oct. 31. With the district championship wrapped up, BCS is sitting at 27-12 on the season.
According to the TAPPS website, the standings in TAPPS 5A District 1 currently have Arlington Grace Prep and Lubbock Trinity tied for fourth in district play. BCS will host the winner of the bi-district playoff game between the No. 5 seed from 2-5A and the No. 4 seed from 1-5A. That game will happen during the week of Nov. 4.
