The varsity girls volleyball team at Brentwood Christian School finished off their memorable season with a 29-13 record, a district championship and numerous individual awards. They played extremely well in close games and exceeded expectations despite moving up to TAPPS 5A.

“Watching the team compete was my favorite part of coaching those girls," said head coach Paula Trejos.

Trejos was named coach of the year in the district after leading the team to a 6-1 record in district play prior to winning the district tournament.

The program's intensive gameplay and pliability in high pressure environments displayed how well the team grew in skill as a whole. After a key loss to Regents in the regular/district season, the team responded by defeating the same squad in the district tournament to secure the championship.

Throughout the season, junior Claire Montgomery and senior Rayen Flandes hit a milestone of 1000 career kills and 2500 career assists, respectively. According to the BCS volleyball MaxPreps page, this season the team had a total of 1,354 kills.

Montgomery, the district MVP, had the highest total of 514 and coming in behind her was senior Abigail Kampman with 336 kills. Flandes, the Outstanding Setter of the Year in the district, led the team in assists, while Newcomer of the Year and sophomore Henley Magee finished in second.

At the state level, Montgomery (first team), Flandes (second team) and Kampman (honorable mention) were all awarded.

Sadly, in the TAPPS area round playoff game against Lubbock Trinity, they faced a tough loss and their season came to an end. Even though their season was completed, the team fought hard until the very end. They played strongly in every game and had Christ-like composure towards every team they encountered.

The team loses six seniors from the squad, including Flandes, Kampman, Elisha Burks, Asia Anderson, Quinn Kirchoff and Ariba Mohammed. They are all such amazing people and reflect the goodness of how our Brentwood volleyball team represents Christ.

Kampman hopes to see the squad continue to push each other moving forward.

“Don’t be afraid to speak up and stand your ground," she said. "Your voice matters, especially in a sport like volleyball.”

The returners will certainly miss the outgoing seniors, as well.

“Having the seniors we had on the team this year were perfect for us," said sophomore Peyton Tucker. "They mentored, led, and encouraged us all throughout the span of the season. We will all miss their presence and kindness that they have shown us as they move forward.”
