Strong Seniors, Relays Lead BCS Boys to Third-Place Finish at State Swim

Brentwood Christian's swim team took to the pool Tuesday in San Antonio, competing for the last time in the 2024-25 season at the TAPPS state competition.

After winning regionals just two weeks prior, the Bears' boys team followed up with a similarly impressive showing this time around, placing third amongst 23 schools in TAPPS Division II. A pair of Houston-area schools, Frassati Catholic School and Bay Area Christian School, took the top two team awards.

Key events for the boys included two relays, the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle, where BCS took third and fourth place, respectively. The quartet of seniors Reid Alexander, Jackson Berger, Gus Ebner and junior Gavin Edmondson turned in a time of 1:51.79 in the 200 IM, good for a bronze medal and a great start for the team.

Elsewhere, freshman Chayce Lee had a strong showing in the 200 individual medley, earning fourth, and turning around later to help the team take fourth in the 200 freestyle relay, alongside Jackson Berger, sophomore Evan Berger and Ebner.

The boys also scored points in the 400 freestyle relay, with Lee, Alexander, Edmondson and Evan Berger taking sixth.

Individually, Alexander was 14th in the 200 free and ninth in the 500 free, Jackson Berger (sixth) and Ebner (eighth) were top 10 in the 50 free, Edmondson (eighth) and Evan Berger (ninth) were top 10 in the 100 butterfly. Ebner (sixth in 100 free), Lee (sixth in 100 breaststroke) and Jackson Berger (eighth in 100 breaststroke) all scored crucial points for BCS, as well.

On the girls side, senior Jennifer Montier closed out her storied career with another medal at the TAPPS level, this time a bronze in the 100 butterfly. She was joined in the feat by teammate and freshman Ali Nelson-Cook, who was able to secure a bronze of her own in the 500 freestyle race with a time of 6:01.31.

Montier (fourth in 100 backstroke) and Nelson-Cook (11th in 200 free) helped the girls to an 11th place finish overall, a respectable mark for the growing program. The duo helped anchor two relay events for the girls, a 12th place finish in the 200 free and a 10th place finish in the 400 free. Sophomores Zoe Ruiz and Gracyn Mayle rounded out the foursome for BCS in those races.

Overall, head coach Jason Montier was pleased with the effort from both genders, the most successful and in-depth season of BCS swimming to date.

The group will lose a handful of extremely talented swimmers on both sides, but with a robust middle school program blossoming and plenty of returning talent, the Bears will look to make their way back to San Antonio in 2026 with similar goals in mind.
